"Pap-pi-lay" (Papillae)

Named after "Puh-pi-lee" (Papillae); plural of "Puh-pi-luh" (Papilla)

Papillae are defined as small round protuberances of tissue on a part or organ of the body concerned with the senses: touch, taste, smell.

Like Fingerprints!

I named Papillae: House of Design LLC after fingerprints, scientifically known as “dermal papillae”:

  • Human fingerprints are nearly unique.

  • Difficult to alter.

  • Persistent over a human life span.

Papillae adopts these qualities by maintaining uniqueness in each and every piece.

The Papillae Cardholder Prototype!!! 💳🪪 Specs: 2 card slots; bigger upper that holds multiple cards and a front wave pocket for single cards and smaller cards like business cards etc. Beaded Border and Slot Dividers; hand-beaded with multicolored glass seed beads. This is the first of many!
Papillae Design Experiences: I had the pleasure of attending @lightology Honoring Louis Poulsen event. 💡🧩🌇 It was a beautiful immersive experience that inspired us here at Papillae:House of Design LLC to continue our journey of marrying style and functionality. This was a design study to observe and learn more techniques and other examples of one of kind style merging with day-to-day functionality. At Papillae, we champion designers of all kinds, in industries of all kinds, with all kinds of mediums! I thought this was a perfect experience to not only venture outside of our own industry of fashion, but also understand the connectivity of designers and people through our ability to create items and experiences that contribute to the day-to-day. 🫶🏾✨

WIP ⚠️ Bag 1 of 100 in production This part of the process is exciting and terrifying! I thought about the mistakes or having to start over because I changed my mind about the function or design. Or if my personal style will resonate with my audience. Then I think about the fact that I messed up twice when cutting, make markings on the wrong side, used Sharpie instead of chalk and still manage to adapt to the changes while keeping integral to the original style design. This journey will be long but most fulfilling! I’m taking my time to make these bags correctly and I won’t let my own thoughts pressure me to make them faster or slower than necessary. I uphold the Papillae Promise to create authentic, high quality pieces that are unique yet appealing to all! 🫶🏾🫧🦋
Next is Design Study!!! 📝🎨📊 Papillae:House of Design LLC champions creativity and we pride ourselves on being intentional. As a business it is important to keep track of inventory and make data-driven decisions. So here’s a glance at creating the SKU numbers or unique identifiers for each bag. A SKU is important to track inventory as it moves through the sales cycles. Also, to honor our pillar of individual expression, each bag will be unique from the others. To maintain the integrity of that, each SKU accounts for a unique style design! This fulfills our promise of 1-of-1 handmade designs while ensuring an array of aesthetics to match yours!! 🫶🏾✨
The next step to our process is converting the washed clothing to manageable flats. Not only does this make the cutting process easier, it lends itself to a new combination of patterns and textures not originally designed from the denim. ✨ Each step is intentional! A personal touch that is only at Papillae:House of Design LLC 🧬🪡🤎
The washing process is one of the most important steps to making a bag. Since we use pre-loved garments, it goes without saying that we clean our donated clothes before sewing or cutting anything. The risks for NOT washing prior to starting…. ☑️Health and Hygienic: due to dirt, odors from donated items. ☑️Compromising the shape and integrity’s of the finished product ☑️Unpleasant experience for creator and customer. At Papillae:House of Design, we execute the 3 pillars, Sustainability, 1-of-1 Designs and Prioritized Customer Service at every level of the process. At this level we wash donations and the scraps from previous projects, hand picked patterns and designs that will stand out and finally ensuring quality and ethics when cleaning.
